What is the Heart River REA?
The Heart River REA is non-profit organization that owns and operates a power distribution system in the Northern Sunrise County and has ownership of a few sites in the MD of Smoky River. The Heart River REA was established in 1994 as an amalgamation of the Reno REA, Judah REA, and the Wesley Creek REA (all established in the 1950’s).
If the Heart River REA owns the poles and lines in my area why do I have to talk to Atco for quotes?
Atco Electric is the main contractor for the Heart River REA in that they supply the engineering, labour and equipment for installations and repairs to the distribution lines and poles. Atco supplies the cost for projects, collects the funds and transfers the fund to the Heart River REA then bills the REA for their work.
Can I use another Electrical Service Contractor to do work on my acreage or farm?
Historically the REA supplied labour, engineering and installation for the distribution lines and poles, however, after time and increasing costs and safety regulations in the electricity industry the Heart River REA board of directors decided to utilize Atco’s expertise and entered into a binding agreement with Atco Electric to do the majority of the work for the REA. In accordance with this agreement the Heart River REA and Atco Electric must be aware and approve of any work done by an outside contractor on the service poles, lines, meters or transformers.
How does a membership in the REA benefit me?
As a member of the REA you currently benefit with lower distribution charges, co-operative ownership in the distribution system you are part of; you can speak to a local board member about concerns you may have about your site; opportunity to attend the AGM and vote on matters put forward at the AGM and be updated on the REAs activity.
Is the REA a retailer?
No, the Heart River REA is not a retailer. The Heart River REA does not supply the energy to your site. In order to energize your site you must contact an energy retailer, supplier.
Does it cost me money to be part of the REA?
Yes, in order to maintain your membership in the REA there are some costs charged each month on your power bill; these charges are collected by the retailer then forwarded to the Heart River REA for operating costs; you should see a DR charge and a Levy charge but each Retailer shows these charges differently so if you are uncertain about these charges please contact your retailer.
How do I become a member of the Heart River REA?
In order to become a member of the Heart River REA you must have purchased a single site residential property within the Heart River REA boundaries; you have built a new single site residential property within the Heart River REA boundaries; you must sign an Electrical Service Contract with the Heart River REA.
